The late David Atcher, a Kentucky musician and psychiatrist,, playing fiddle tunes amidst the tents at the Appalachian String Band Festival in West Virginia.
Clifftop (the Appalachian String Band Festival) is an annual, week-long gathering of old-time musicians on a mountaintop in West Virginia. It attracts several thousand festival goers from across the U.S. and the world. I took a photo of David along with some other folks in a jam, way back in 2004. When I began doing commissions, David's sister, my best buddy, commissioned this for a birthday gift to him. He was very touched. David was a leader in running the Lexington contra dance group for many years. Sadly, he passed away suddenly in 2020, and he is greatly missed by the many people who worked and played with him. The original of this painting is on semi-permanent loan to the University of Kentucky Chandler Hospital to honor David's alma mater.
